Monday - We arrived at La Bendicion!

After a two hour drive on mountain roads, we arrived at La Bendicion!

This village has been established for 50 families (quite a bit smaller than Tierra Nueva, the first village that New Community Church helped to establish in Nicaragua at 175 families).


The land is beautiful with lots of trees. Its very tropical with the temperature well in the 90s.

We held our morning welcome ceremony in the building at the bottom of the hill.

These are some of the homes in the village.  The vegetation here is huge.
Everything grows so big with all the rain and the sun this climate gets.

The village has a two room school for grades pre-school through 6th grade.  Our afternoon 
activities took place in the school house.  It was nice to be in the shade!

Roosters, chickens, and other animals run wild in the village.  This rooster kept crowing as we ate lunch. Animals are not pets here, we were encouraged not to pet them as we would back home.

Gorgeous flowers are everywhere - what a beautiful village.

Tuesday - Family Pictures, Bibles, and FUN!

During last year's visit to La Bendicion, Edwin, the village board president expressed a desire to have his own bible.  What a joy it was to see his hope fulfilled this year!  This was made possible by a young couple from New Community Church, who is getting married this spring.  They donated the funds for us to purchase the bibles that we gave to the families today.   We bundled a Spanish bible (for adults) together with a Spanish version of the Jesus Storybook Bible (for the kids/students) for each family.   Aron was able to talk to each family, shake the hand of the parents and present them with their bibles.   In the room where the crafts were happening (more on that below), there was a man who immediately sat down and began to read his bible.  He sat and read for a long time while all the activities buzzed around him.  Watching him read intently was a beautiful affirmation to the gift that God's word is to all of us, and one more thing that we can sometime

Monday - Lunchtime and Afternoon Activities

It is a great honor for families to host teams like us for lunch in their home, so on Monday they split us into two groups of six to be able to eat in two homes.  One group had the translator, and the other group had Aron Martino and Gail Dean (who has been studying Spanish using Duolingo) to piece together the conversation like a funny puzzle.  When they return to Pittsburgh - ask them about that lunch!   After lunch, we went to the school house for the afternoon activities.  Kyra Carlson kicked off a game of "Duck, Duck, Goose" using Spanish words, and it was a huge hit!  The kids played for almost 30 minutes with lots of laughter and screams of joy coming from that room, while all the parents watched and laughed as well. We then switched activities to the crafts.  Some of us painted nails for the kids and the women. Wednesday - Saying goodbye

It's amazing that we were only in the village for three days, because the connections among our people went deep.  On this last day men, women, and children were hugging, high-fiving, laughing, and simply enjoying the feeling of community despite our language barrier. Even the kids started to smile when we took pictures! And then, it came time to say goodbye, and several of the kids that were smiling, began to look a little sad.  We gathered in the school house for one last "ceremony" together to say goodbye.  They decorated the white board for us to thank us for our visit. They sang us a song of farewell, and sang Kyra Martino Happy Birthday (she turns 15 on Friday). They presented each of us with a special gift. ...calling each of us by name one at a time so that one of the children from La Bendicion could give us our gift and a hug.
